Ariza sets the tone and a career-high in win over 76ers

March 2, 2014

With Allen Iverson set to get his jersey retired in a halftime ceremony, the Philadelphia 76ers were eager to impress. After only one quarter it was clear that Philadelphia fans could still celebrate Iverson's career, but on the court the night belonged to Trevor Ariza and the Wizards in a 122-103 victory.

Ariza scored a career-high 40 points, including 24 in the first quarter, to help extend the Wizards' winning streak to a season-high six games. John Wall had 17 points and 16 assists. Eight of Wall's assists came in the opening 12 minutes.

Thanks to Bryan Albin and Ben Barr for the montage.

The Wizards succeeded in what could have been considered a "trap game." The Wizards are growing.

Randy Wittman:

"I think they're beginning to learn what it's about. We have a lot of guys that have never been in the hunt for a playoff spot. They're learning the importance of games. Sometimes you hear the coach talking about the tenth or eleventh game of the season, and again they look at you kind of crazy. They're filtering what it's all about now and we have to continue to play like this through the last 22, 23, 24 games we have left."
