Wizards are Going the Distance with Short Bench

December 11, 2013

On Monday in the 75-74 loss to the Nuggets, Trevor Booker provided 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Glen Rice had 7 points and 3 steals. It was nice to see Booker and Rice add more to the final box, but they started against the Nuggets.

In the words of head coach Randy Wittman, "We have to find a way to get more than five points from our bench." The Wizards are last in the NBA in bench production at a little over 18 points a game. The Lakers lead the NBA in bench production at over 48 points per game.

Even though Booker and Rice did not add to the Wizards' bench numbers, it is important that they use the game against the Nuggets as a launching pad going forward.

LISTEN:

Booker has been making a strong push for more playing time and over the last three games has scored 27 points and 26 rebounds. Nene's right foot tendinitis opened the door for Booker to start on Monday.

Rice was in the starting lineup against the Nuggets in place of Martell Webster out with a sprained left ankle. As noted in the above Wizards Report, Rice was tentative on offense at first, but seemed to grow in confidence as the game went on. In many ways Rice was more impressive on defense against the Nuggets and was aggressive the whole night.

It is hoped Webster will be back Friday against the Hawks. If that is the case, Rice has to come off the bench looking to score. The same story for Trevor Booker when Nene returns to the starting lineup.

Booker and Rice's performances on Monday were a positive step, and now the Wizards need more.
